Basically to keep this concise and uncomplicated Vladimir Putin the Russian President does not see Ukraine as a legitimate country, with its borders within Russia’s land.
Ukraine become independent and broke away from the former Communist continent of the USSR after it all collapsed in the early 90s. (USSR: a big country Russia created after World War 2 with a lot of the Eastern European nations East of Germany with its own political system… communism).
President Putin still sees Ukraine as historically and ethnically part of Russia so he is taking it back.
It is a similar stand-off the world had with Adolf Hitler at the start of World War II.
He was claiming he was only taking land back that was rightfully historically German.
It now seems history is repeating itself.
Do all of these “good nations” stand by and watch a more powerful country bully smaller defenceless countries and stand there and do nothing?
Or do we stand up for them and fight their corner?
This is something Putin has warned would be catastrophic for the rest of the world if other countries do get involved.
Heavy sanctions have been imposed on Russia (financial penalties and restrictions of commercial trading). Though it is likely to have little effect because China and rogue nations like North Korea will now buy up a lot of Russian gas and oil so this will keep money flowing in to the Russians.
Like the Cold War, East & West are pointing their nukes at each other once again. But this all turned out to just be political tension and threats in the end and no nuclear war ever happened.
Hopefully history will repeat itself again and there will be no shots fired between Soviet and Allied forces and this won’t blow up into World War 3 as it would end the world as we know it 🙏🏼
